Liposuction, an increasingly popular body contouring procedure, is no longer sought by an exclusively female crowd.
According to the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS), more than 580 men in Britain had liposuction treatment back in 2016 and there is little doubt those numbers are probably even higher in 2020. But why? Here’s is everything you need to know about liposuction for men.
Why is liposuction for men becoming popular?
With minimally-invasive techniques and the ability to customize the procedure to the specific concerns of each patient, it’s no wonder men are taking another look at this cosmetic procedure.
Men may look to liposuction for a number of reasons today.
Some may yearn for the muscular ripples and lean physique of their youth and find their basic workout regimen no longer produces the same positive results.
Others may notice a little extra flab in those problem areas, but don’t have the time to invest in a diet and exercise program that will give them the results they need.
By enhancing the body contour, men may achieve the extra confidence they need to succeed in both their professional and personal lives.
Is Liposuction surgery worth it for men?
That is really down to you as an individual and only you will know if it is really worth it.
Many of our patients swear by it and are satisfied with the results liposuction from Linia has achieved for them.
One thing we can’t overstate is that you should not rush into it. Consider some of the benefits, though:
- Removal of stubborn fat that you haven’t been able to shift with just a healthy lifestyle, diet and exercise
- If you have a disproportionate figure, something that you will have experience of if you tend to store huge amounts of fat in your stomach and abdominal area, which has made you feel embarrassed with low self-esteem
- The kickstart you need to fight against further weight gain and achieve a healthier lifestyle
- Unwanted fat removal
If you are still unsure whether liposuction is right for you or not, you need to think about whether you are a good candidate or not. Our guide on the advantages and disadvantages of liposuction can help you make a decision.
At your consultation appointment, the surgeon will discuss this with you.
To save you a bit of time and money, but also to give you some insight before you decide one way or another, let’s discuss what makes someone a good candidate for it.
Ideally, you should either be at your target weight or slightly below it.
Although used as a fat removal procedure, it is generally only used for the removal of discreet, but highly resistant fatty deposits that have thus far not reduced or gone even after using a targeted exercise and diet program.
One reason why you need to be careful with your expectations of using it as a means to lose weight is that aspirated fat has a weight that is particularly small in comparison to your overall body weight.
However, if you are looking to achieve a physique that is more in proportion, want to help make your clothes fit better and at least give you the outward appearance of losing a significant amount of weight, the targeted use of traditional liposuction on well-defined fatty deposits and areas where that harder to shift fat can definitely help.
Is liposuction for men safe?
Although in general, traditional liposuction is safe, it is still a form of cosmetic surgery and such, comes with certain risks.
These risks can be reduced greatly, though by only having the procedure performed by fully trained, qualified, certified and experienced surgeons, like one of the team here at Linia.
The risks that you need to be aware of before having liposuction includes:
- General Anaesthetic and Local Anaesthetic related complications and issues
- Bleeding (although there may be some bleeding around the small incision, it should not really continue or reoccurr after you have had the procedure)
- Shock (normally a result of not receiving enough fluid during the procedure)
- Abdominal organs, lungs, muscles, blood vessels and nerve damage
- Infections like staph and strep
- Fluid accumulation (pockets full of fluid that form under the surface of the skin)
- Burns caused by the apparatus and instruments used
- Fat embolism (when small pieces of fat break off and block the flow of blood)
- Uneven amounts of fat removed
- Numbness and changes in your skin sensation
Possibly one of the most serious risks of having liposuction surgery is blood clots developing in your deep veins. These are especially dangerous if they move to other parts of the body, such as the lungs.
This is rare and you should always contact the Doctor if you feel unwell to diagnose any issues.
You may be worried about scarring, but as just a small incision is required, this is not likely to be too much of a problem. Any small and subtle scarring that remains will eventually fade away.
How much is liposuction for men?
Although the starting price for male liposuction is around the £4,000 mark, we don’t have a standard price.
Every patient is different with different goals, and our trained surgeons treat every liposuction procedure as unique and individual.
So any mention of prices on this site or anywhere else should only be taken as a guide. To find out a more accurate quote for your liposuction, you should arrange a consultation with one of our surgeons.
How much weight will you lose with liposuction?
Again, as the results and the effects of liposuction surgery are varied and depend on a number of factors, the amount of fat each patient loses will be different.
At your consultation appointment, the surgeon will explain what you can expect with regards to weight loss. On average, though, most tend to lose between 2 and 5 pounds overall (0.9 – 2.26kg).
Though this doesn’t sound like much, many patients want liposuction to remove fat from stubborn, problem areas rather than to lose weight overall.
You should also picture what 5lbs of fat looks like if it was laid out in front of you. It’s a LOT of adipose tissue.
A block of butter is around 1/4 of a kg. Now imagine eight to twenty blocks of butter being removed from your body. That’s a lot of fat.
The candidates who have the best experience are those are 30% within the range of a healthy weight.
Having said that, with the right healthy lifestyle changes, along with liposuction, patients can experience losing between 20 and 30-pounds or more of weight (not just as a result of liposuction, it must be stressed.)
Obviously, if you do not follow a lifestyle of diet and exercise, you will potentially experience weight gain in the areas where you lost whatever amount of fat you lost.
Where do men normally get liposuction?
Liposuction can be performed just about anywhere where there are fatty deposits of stubborn fat that you have found hard to shift using traditional, non-surgical methods.
There are, as you would imagine, some areas that are more common and popular among men, where people like to have liposuction surgery. Some of the most requested areas at Linia Cosmetic include:
- Stomach and Abdomen
- Chin, neck and face
- Inner and Outer Thighs
Don’t worry, though, if the specific body part where you would be interested in having liposuction performed is not noted above, as you will be able to discuss this more during your consultation appointment.
Liposuction is the go-to solution for eliminating stubborn pockets of fat from areas like the waist and back.
Typically, those bulging deposits do not respond well to diet and exercise, so liposuction can be used to create a smoother, leaner body contour.
Men typically turn to liposuction to banish pesky love handles and trim up the lower abdomen, common areas where fat accumulates. It can also be used on the back, neck or breasts to create a younger, more masculine body shape.
By trimming away those fat deposits, men are also finding they can create greater muscle definition, particularly in the abdominal area.
In some cases, fat removed from one area can be harvested and injected into another area in need of enhancement. For example, men may transfer fat cells to the biceps or calves to create the appearance of more muscle.
At Linia, we offer two different types of liposuction techniques so we can tailor treatment to the unique needs of each of our patients.
Vaser liposuction, which has become a popular choice for many men, uses high frequency vibration to loosen fat cells prior to eliminating them from the body.
This results in a smoother contour without damaging the surrounding skin and tissue.
Soft liposculpture can be used to remove fat in small layers, also resulting in less trauma to the body.
Deep massage is performed after the procedure to ensure better distribution of remaining fat and tissue for a smoother result.
Special cannulas used during the procedure also result in firmer, tighter skin around the treatment area for the best possible results.
Liposuction is not a treatment for obesity and is usually reserved for patients who have already achieved a healthy weight.
The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis and usually don’t require an overnight stay – most men are back to regular activities within a day or two after the surgery.
