The aim of Otoplasty or Pinnaplasty, also known as ear correction surgery is to improve the contour and shape of the ears.
Ear Reshaping Surgery - Otoplasty / Pinnaplasty
Ears that stick out or appear imbalanced in terms of size and shape to the rest of your face can cause you to be self-conscious and make you an easy target for teasing, jokes and nicknames.
It is a particularly popular procedure with men as short hairstyles mean ears are much more noticeable.
Changing the shape and size of your ears gives you renewed confidence in your looks improving the overall appearance of your face.
This surgery can empower you to make different social choices and be more confident as you embrace life.
Ear Reshaping Procedure (Otoplasty or Pinnaplasty)
Ear correction surgery can be performed under either local or general anaesthetic. A small incision is made behind the ear, following the groove between the ear and the side of the head.
If the earlobe is especially large, this may also be reduced and corrected.
The procedure may involve the following for your ear:
- removal of cartilage, followed by the use of stitching to hold the ear in place while it recovers.
Sutures are used to close all the incisions made on your ear.
Although it is normally performed on both your ears, in order to maintain a sense of symmetry, there are situations where it may just be performed on a single ear.
A small dressing is applied after ear correction surgery and this is kept on until the wound is checked, usually 10 days after surgery.
Your surgeon will recommend, and we can’t stress how important this is, that you avoid swimming, heavy lifting and participating in any form of strenuous exercise or other physical activities for at least 6 weeks after surgery.
Following the surgery you will have at least one follow-up appointment that will enable your surgeon to assess the progress you are making and advise you if you can resume your regular activities yet.
Depending on the kind of employer you have and your personal circumstances, you should really be looking to stay away from work for at least one week.
Do You Offer Ear Reshaping For Men and Women?
Yes, this procedure is suitable for both men and women.
Every person is treated individually whether male or female and your particular case will be discussed thoroughly during your consultation with our surgeon.
Ear Surgery Benefits
We noted some of the main reasons why people have ear surgery. However, it’s worth discussing the benefits of these procedures in a bit more detail.
- Improved self esteem and confidence – though generally ears are not considered to be the most prominent feature of your head and face, at times they can be. When they are unnaturally large or small, imbalanced or stand out in any other way, it can draw attention away from your more attractive features.
This can affect your confidence, as you may suffer from bullying or teasing. Even if you don’t, you may still lack confidence to lead a normal life. Ear surgery can therefore improve your self esteem and confidence.
- Solution to Various Structural Issues
If you have any birth or congenital issues with your ears, otoplasty can help to solve these. Problems like excessively large, small, folded or even cupped ears can be treated.
Ear Reshaping Recovery
Generally ear surgery and otoplasty can be performed as a single-day procedure, meaning you can go home after the surgeon has finished.
However there are occasions where the work has been so extensive that you need to stay in hospital for at least one night.
You will be given a dressing to cover your ears, around your head. The surgeon who performed the procedure will tell you how long you need to keep it there and if you need to wear a lighter and smaller one after it’s been removed to continue protecting your ears.
It’s not uncommon to experience some pain the next few days after the procedure.
To help reduce this though, you will normally be prescribed painkillers, you need to take regularly in the days afterwards. Another common side effect is bruising and swelling, but this will ease and disappear in time.
Every surgery and case is different. Your surgeon will give you a better idea of how long recovery will take in your particular case.
Ear Reshaping Surgery Cost
Although there are structured approaches to Otoplasty, every patient is different and we approach each as such.
Therefore, it is only at your initial consultation appointment your surgeon will be able to advise you of what work is required, how much it will cost, how long it will take and what the recovery period will be.

Will my consultation be with a surgeon?
All consultations take place with a surgeon. We believe that only a surgeon can help and advise you on the best procedure to achieve the results you would like.
During your initial consultation, we will ask you about the results you are looking for and explain the procedure so that you understand every stage of the process. The most important thing is that you feel completely at ease in our care and fully aware of the procedure and the resulting enhancement.
Are your consultations free?
All of our consultations are free with no obligation. You will be provided with advice and information relevant to achieve the results you desire.
What will happen after Ear Correction Surgery?
Your surgeon will see you when you have come round from the anaesthetic to check that all is well, and will discharge you providing you are fit to return home. You will be given medication and full post-operative instructions along with appropriate telephone numbers in case you need to contact us at any time.
You will see the surgeon after 7-10 days so that he can check your progress and remove your dressing and check your wounds. After this, you can wash your hair normally. Following ear correction surgery, we recommend that a protective headband is worn when sleeping to avoid the ears being bent forward against the pillow.
You will see your surgeon once more at between 8 and 10 weeks after your ear correction surgery for a full post-operative consultation.
